On Off Digital World and the Computers of My Youth
I came across On Off Digital World yesterday and and I was gripped by some powerful flashbacks. You see, that store looked like them “mom-and-pop” sort of places from my childhood, when a personal computer for most people meant the best-selling Commodore 64. I can still see the ad for one of those C-64 system bundles in computer magazines of the time, promos that provided both peripherals and software. Those were the days! Big five-inch-plus floppy diskettes, big disk drives, big CRT monitors with small fifteen-inch screens! Really fun software in those days, too — and I mean really amazing, for all the limitations of 64KB! The ’80s were definitely something in every way, but particularly when it comes to matters of personal computing!
